As I started writing this blog post about Malorie's senior portrait session I was all set to write about the different elements of the photoshoot and how each different outfit and location at San Antonio Botanical Gardens show a different aspect of who she is. It was really awesome to capture not just her femininity, but also her love for the country life (and Texas), but what is sticking with me is a brief moment during our pre-session consultation.
Malorie is a senior this year, and will be graduating next spring. During our conversation the topic moved from planning the shoot, to what Malorie has planned for after high school. She was honest and said she didn't know exactly what she wanted to do yet. I sure didn't know what I wanted to do after high school, all I knew was I wanted to be an artist - hardly a specific career choice (or career choice at all, according to my parents).
I remember high school as all about getting good grades, then getting good SAT/ACT scores, applying for scholarships and grants, and lastly applying for college. It was endless people asking me "what do you want to do after high school?" or "what are you going to go to college for?" The truth is so many people have no clue what they want to do, or what type of job they'll excel all, when they are 17 or 18 years old and that is normal. That is okay. It's crazy that the only socially approved route to "success" is to pick a career field and take out thousands of dollars in loans fresh out of high school to study it for 4 years.
Okay - before I go on a really long rant I'll stop myself. It was just so nice to see someone who was able to look at the standard way of doing things and say - nope, that might not be the best path for me. It takes a lot of courage and strength to stand up and be true to yourself in a world full of conformity. I think that's another reason why I loved this portrait session so much - we were able to capture so many different parts of Malorie's personality and what she loves. That is what senior portraits, or any portrait session for that matter, are all about. It's about celebrating who you are. There are so many great routes to take after high school and it's most important to take the path that is right for you!
Congrats on your upcoming graduation, Malorie! I can't wait to see where life takes you!
